Abstract

Pedagogical games are important resources for the learning and holistic development of children in early childhood education, as they offer opportunities to explore, interact, engage in physical movement, and express feelings. However, their use must extend beyond mere entertainment, rewards, or a way to fill time—all while preserving the freedom and joy inherent in play. This study aimed to analyze pedagogical games as a tool that facilitates learning in early childhood education, identifying their contributions to a child’s holistic development. The research sought to address how these resources can be integrated into the daily school routine to foster comprehensive and meaningful learning. The study employs a qualitative, bibliographic approach, developed through the selection, reading, and analysis of academic works and official documents concerning games, play, learning, and child development. Information was organized through exploratory reading, analytical reading, and the creation of research notes. The analysis was conducted interpretatively and thematically, focusing on learning, holistic development, teacher mediation, and pedagogical intentionality. The results indicate that games can support the construction of knowledge and the development of language, attention, memory, reasoning, and motor coordination. They can also contribute to the expression of feelings, the development of autonomy, and the ability to coexist with others. Nevertheless, these contributions do not arise solely from the presence of games in the daily routine; rather, they depend on opportunities for participation, social interaction, and guidance from the teacher. Planning, the organization of spaces, the selection of materials, and the adaptation of activities must take into account children’s interests, needs, and characteristics. Educators should broaden children’s experiences without controlling every choice, while respecting their imagination and initiative. Regarding pedagogical challenges, the analysis highlights the need to strike a balance between guidance and freedom, to organize spaces and materials effectively, and to align planning with children’s interests—all while ensuring their active participation in these experiences. It is concluded that the overall objective was met—within the inherent limitations of a bibliographic study—and that games can foster meaningful learning when employed with clear pedagogical intent. This work contributes to the ongoing reflection on planning and mediation in early childhood education, and underscores the importance of field research concerning pedagogical challenges and the conditions under which games are used.
