Phenomenological-Gestalt Psychopathology: A Critique of the Biomedical Model and a Relational Alternative

This article proposes a critique of the hegemonic biomedical model in psychopathology, especially the DSM, highlighting its limitations in reducing psychological distress to biological causes and diagnostic categories. Based on a literature review, phenomenological-Gestalt psychopathology is presented as a relational alternative, understanding suffering as an emerging phenomenon within the organism/environmental realm. Grounded in Husserl's phenomenology and the theory of the self, Gestalt therapy emphasizes lived experience, the aesthetics of contact, and creative adjustment as keys to clinical listening. Psychopathology, from this perspective, is understood as a form of relationship rather than as an isolated dysfunction of the individual. The article concludes by highlighting the need for a psychopathology that restores relational unity, overcoming dichotomies such as healthy/pathological and biological/social, contributing to psychological care based on intersubjectivity, that is, less individualistic.
