The Family as a Structuring Axis of Nursing Care in Mental Health: An Integrative Review

In Brazil, the National Mental Health Policy and the Psychiatric Reform promoted the replacement of the hospital-centric model with community-based and humanized care. In this context, nursing plays a fundamental role in promoting therapeutic care and social inclusion. Furthermore, the family exerts influence on mental health, acting both as a protective factor and as a crucial element in mental illness, becoming indispensable in the care and rehabilitation process. This study aimed to understand the importance of the family in the care and rehabilitation process of people with mental disorders from a nursing perspective. This is an integrative literature review, conducted through the selection of articles found in the SciELO and BVS (LILACS, MEDLINE, and BDENF) databases, using the descriptors: "family," "mental health," and "nursing." After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 16 scientific articles were selected, which were analyzed and organized into thematic categories. Studies have shown that the family is a fundamental element in mental health care, contributing to treatment adherence, reducing relapses and hospitalizations, as well as promoting resocialization and acceptance of the person experiencing mental distress. Family support strengthens affective bonds, promotes emotional well-being, and assists in the patient's recovery. The importance of family-centered care, the building of bonds between professionals, users, and family members, and the use of strategies such as home visits were also highlighted. It is concluded that the articulation between family, nursing team, and mental health care network is fundamental to guaranteeing humanized, comprehensive, inclusive care focused on the social reintegration of people experiencing mental distress.
