Abstract

Oral health is a fundamental component of general health and quality of life, linked to psychosocial aspects, self-esteem, communication, and well-being. Among denture wearers, inadequate hygiene and a lack of periodic dental check-ups can foster biofilm accumulation and microorganism proliferation, contributing to the development of oral mucosal lesions such as denture stomatitis. This study aimed to assess the importance of periodic dental follow-ups in preventing denture stomatitis among wearers of complete and removable partial dentures. An integrative literature review was conducted by searching the PubMed, Virtual Health Library (VHL/BVS), SciELO, Web of Science, Scopus, and ScienceDirect databases. DeCS and MeSH descriptors related to terms such as Dental Care, Denture Stomatitis, Complete Denture, and Partial Denture were used, combined via Boolean operators according to the established search strategy. The analyzed studies demonstrated that poor denture hygiene is associated with increased biofilm accumulation and the proliferation of microorganisms—particularly *Candida* species—which are frequently linked to the onset and progression of denture stomatitis. Furthermore, periodic dental follow-ups proved significant for providing guidance on denture and oral cavity hygiene, enabling the early detection of mucosal changes, and facilitating the implementation of preventive and therapeutic measures. Periodic dental follow-up constitutes a key strategy for preventing denture stomatitis, especially when combined with proper denture hygiene, the maintenance of oral health, and patient education regarding the care required for the use and maintenance of dental prostheses.
