Abstract

Chronic low back pain is na important cause of disability and has a multifactorial etiology, making uniform treatment responses difficult. This study aimed to critically analyze clinical evidence on the use of botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) for chronic low back pain, considering efficacy, safety, and duration of effect. Na integrative literature review was conducted using the PubMed/MEDLINE and SciELO databases, including twelve studies: seven clinical trials and five systematic reviews. Findings were heterogeneous: some trials demonstrated pain reduction and functional improvement, whereas others found no superiority over placebo. Recent meta-analyses indicate na overall benefit, although the certainty of evidence is low to very low for most outcomes. BoNT-A may be na interventional strategy for selected patients with refractory low back pain, particularly those with a myofascial component, but it should not be considered a treatment capable of correcting disc herniation.
