Impacts of the Absence of Psychological Support on the Mental Health of Patients in Palliative Care: An Integrative Review

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the impacts of the absence of psychological support on the mental health of patients in palliative care, with an emphasis on the context of the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) and the contributions of the psychologist's role. This is an integrative literature review, conducted in the SciELO, PePSIC, Google Scholar, and LILACS databases, considering studies published between 2021 and 2026. Articles available in full, in Portuguese, and with free access, that directly address the proposed theme were included. Data analysis was conducted qualitatively, with the findings organized into thematic categories. The results showed that the absence or insufficiency of psychological support can intensify psychological suffering, triggering symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and distress, as well as negatively impacting family members, especially in the context of anticipatory grief. It was also observed that the psychologist's role contributes significantly to the welcoming and management of emotional suffering and the promotion of more humanized care. It is concluded that psychological support is an essential component in palliative care, being fundamental for promoting the quality of life, dignity, and well-being of patients and their families.
