Growing up in the Shadow of Narcissism: Impacts of Maternal-Narcissistic Behavior on the Formation of Children's Identity

This study analyzed the impacts of narcissistic maternal behavior on the identity formation of adult children in dysfunctional family contexts. Its guiding question was: what is the impact of narcissistic maternal behavior on the identity formation of adult children exposed to emotional abuse and role reversal? This is an integrative literature review, conducted in the CAPES, PubMed, and PsycINFO databases, using the descriptors "narcissistic mother," "identity," and "adult children." Eight articles published between 2021 and 2026, in Portuguese and English, were included. The qualitative analysis showed that mothers with narcissistic traits tend to treat their children as extensions of themselves, imposing idealizations and constant criticism, which compromises their psychological development. Among the main impacts identified are low self-esteem, exacerbated self-criticism, anxiety, depression, difficulties with autonomy, and, in more severe cases, complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. It is concluded that maternal-narcissistic behavior significantly compromises identity construction, favoring the perpetuation of dysfunctional patterns in adulthood. Psychological intervention proved fundamental for the reconstruction
