Abstract

The São Francisco River is considered the largest river entirely within the Brazilian territory. Its productive waters are significant for the riverside communities, which derive their livelihood from it, through the practice of artisanal fishing along its entire length. Under the Ethnoichthyology and Ethnoecology points of view, the fishers reveal satisfactory knowledge about fish behavior, which is therefore applied to fishing strategies and match the scientific observations. This paper aims to differentiate the fishing activities in the Municipality of Sobradinho, State of Bahia, from the strict point of view of Ethno-historical knowledge of the artisanal fishers along the riverside communities of Balneario Chico Periquito and Porto de Juacema. Twenty-four fishers have been interviewed at both sites during the period from November 2017 to June 2018. Species richness has been calculated using the Past software, demonstrating that the market value species thereof cited are representative. Characterizing and knowing the fisheries scenario allows us to make contextualized analysis of the challenges and opportunities that will ensure the future of the extractive activity and the riverside communities in the Municipality of Sobradinho.
