Mapping Nursing Theories in the Context of Care for Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease

This study aims to map the main nursing theories used in the literature for the care of patients with Chronic Kidney Disease. It is a narrative review conducted in the Virtual Health Library using the MEDLINE, BDENF, LILACS, and SCIELO databases, from September to October 2024. The following Health Sciences Descriptors and Boolean operator were used for the search strategy: Nursing Theory AND Chronic Kidney Disease AND Nursing Care. The theories found consisted of the Humanistic Nursing Theory, the Theory of Basic Human Needs, the Comfort Theory, and the Transitions Theory. All of them were used to support the care offered to patients with chronic kidney disease in a unique, holistic way, respecting the general needs for well-being and comfort in all dimensions, focusing on promoting patient autonomy. Thus, they contributed to the improvement of nursing care, enabling a comprehensive and individualized approach to the patient.
