Abstract: Stroke induces pulmonary dysfunction, resulting from weakness of the respiratory muscles, and critically affects essential functions such as coughing, swallowing, postural stability, and cardiorespiratory capacity. Objective: To synthesize recent scientific knowledge on the implications of pulmonary function impairment in post-stroke patients. Methodology: A search was conducted in the PubMed, Cochrane Library, and BVS databases. 12 studies were included for this review. Results: Post-stroke pulmonary impairment is a prevalent and clinically relevant finding, the severity of which is correlated with the severity of the brain injury. The main intervention finding is the effectiveness of Respiratory Muscle Training. Conclusion: Pulmonary function impairment is a significant sequela of stroke. Respiratory Muscle Training is an essential and highly effective intervention that should be incorporated early into the rehabilitation plan.
