Abstract

This study aims to investigate the psychometric properties of the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) for the Cape Verdean population. A total of 284 people aged between 20 and 60 years (M=47.3; SD=9.1) from the nine islands of the archipelago and residents of the diaspora participated. The sample was divided into two halves for cross-validation of the results. First, item and factor analyses were performed to investigate the factor structure of PANAS. Next, internal consistency, reliability, and external evidence of validity were explored. As expected, the PANAS presented two factors, explaining 56.7% of the total variance. Rosenberg's Life Satisfaction, Positivity, and Self-Esteem scales demonstrated a positive correlation with the PANAS-P subscale and a negative correlation with the PANAS-N subscale. It was concluded that the PANAS has satisfactory psychometric qualities, proving to be a reliable instrument for measuring positive and negative affect in the Cape Verdean population.
