Abstract

Bruxism consists of dynamic or static tooth contact during periods other than chewing or swallowing, associated with stress and anxiety. Botulinum toxin type A emerges as a therapeutic alternative, acting by blocking the release of acetylcholine at nerve endings, reducing the masticatory muscle activity involved in bruxism. The objective of this study was to investigate the applicability of botulinum toxin as an adjunctive treatment for bruxism, highlighting its efficacy and safety. This work is a narrative review of the literature, in which a bibliographic search was conducted in the PubMed and SciELO databases. The articles were read to extract the following data: authors, year of publication, study type, study objective, and main findings regarding the efficacy and safety of botulinum toxin for treatment. Treatment with botulinum toxin was compared with the use of occlusal splints, placebo, or no treatment. The main results observed were a decrease in the frequency and intensity of nocturnal bruxism, a reduction in facial pain, and a reduction in the side effects of the toxin. This review highlighted botulinum toxin as an effective and safe alternative for the adjunctive treatment of bruxism.
