Introduction: The lifestyles of older adults have been profoundly affected during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially due to social isolation measures, which have intensified feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and depression. Objective: Given the above, this study sought to analyze the main factors that compromised the mental health of older adults in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as aspects related to coping with this process. Methodology: This is an integrative literature review carried out through the Biblioteca Virtual de em Saúde (BVS), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), and Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (Medline), adopting an adaptation of the PRISMA 2020 protocol. Results and discussion: Aspects such as separation from family members, digital exclusion, and the overload of alarming information have aggravated psychological distress, negative perception of one's own age, sedentary lifestyle, and disruption of routines have contributed to the emotional and functional decline of the older population. In contrast, actions such as family support, regular physical activity and strengthening spirituality have proven to be relevant protective factors. Final considerations: the development of public policies that promote comprehensive care for the elderly, with a focus on mental health, digital inclusion and maintenance of emotional bonds, especially in situations of health crises, is an essential aspect. The adoption of interdisciplinary strategies can contribute to preserving the well-being and dignity of this vulnerable population.
