Laparoscopy and its Indication for detecting Pelvic Endometriosis: A Systematic Review of Literature

The steps for diagnosing endometriosis begin with a careful investigation of the patient's clinical history, gynecological examination, imaging tests, and laparoscopy with biopsy to define the diagnosis. Appropriate management should be performed by a multidisciplinary team, which may be clinical or surgical. Methods: A systematic review by meta-synthesis of the literature was carried out through studies published between August and October 2023, using the PubMED, BVS, and Medline databases, with the objective of identifying, at national and international levels, the accuracy of

preoperative mapping of endometriosis lesions through transvaginal ultrasound for detection of pelvic endometriosis, using laparoscopy as the gold standard, in order to compare pre-surgical findings with those obtained during surgery. This systematic review of the literature concluded that transvaginal ultrasound with mapping for endometriosis proved to be effective in the pre-surgical diagnosis of deep pelvic endometriosis lesions and endometrioma, and can replace diagnostic laparoscopy, contributing to better surgical planning, resulting in better surgical results, with a lower risk of complications and providing gains in the quality of life for patients.
