Quality of Life in Family Farming: A Study on Ergonomics in Farmers' Work Activities

Abstract

This article provides an approach on quality of life and ergonomics, considering the work activities of family farmers and the harmful effects on their health, in a broad concept of ergonomics when analyzed through the prism of physical, mental and psychological conditions and how much this affects the quality of life. Emphasizing that the concept of quality of life goes beyond the simple absence of disease, being healthy is just one of the factors that lead to improved quality of life, it has multidimensional characteristics that include social, political, economic and cultural factors, however, In this research, we selected the factors related to ergonomics in work activities. A qualitative approach study of non-systematic literature review was carried out, through bibliographical research, developed by 17 authors, in scientific articles, preferably published in the last 5 years to the present day, at least 75% of the references correspond to this period, in addition to the classics or texts based on current legislation. The main objective was to systematize the issues that deal with ergonomic conditions in the work activities of farmers and the relationship with their quality of life. Studies of this nature are important to compile the elements to improve the quality of life in the countryside through the various possibilities. Some of them go through occupational health issues identified in the daily life of rural activities, especially of small workers historically excluded from the privileges enjoyed by large landowners in technological terms of work tools, thus the activities in the field for small family farmers in their most are still rudimentary and cause serious damage to your health from an ergonomic point of view. In this context, the article portrays the importance of observing ergonomic working conditions and their direct relationship with the physical, psychological and mental state of rural workers and their implications for quality of life. As a result of the literature review, it is noted how the technological advances included in rural areas over the years can benefit and at the same time problematize ergonomic issues in the work activities of family farmers, since the correct use of machinery and technology tools can minimize manual labor and the intense workload, but on the other hand, when used inappropriately, can bring serious ergonomic problems and consequently reduce the quality of life of male and female farmers. Therefore, it is worth reflecting on the correct intervention in the work activities of family farmers in order to bring sustainable development and quality of life, without the productivist idea brought by a capitalist context of production.
