Abstract

The increasing use of digital devices among adolescents raises concerns about the impacts on cognitive, emotional and social development. Digital stress, related to social networks, involves reactions to notifications, expectations, judgments and pressures in relationships, but its definitions are still evolving. This study aimed to investigate the impact of social media on the mental health of adolescents, focusing on depression and stress. An integrative exploratory review was conducted in the Psycinfo, Scielo, Lilacs and Pubmed databases, selecting 141 studies, of which 13 met the inclusion criteria. The digital environment has been associated with increased symptoms of depression and stress in adolescents, as well as compulsive behaviors, substance use, worse sleep and increased suicidal ideation. Excessive use of digital media can harm the mental health of adolescents, and more research is needed to create strategies that promote a healthy use of these technologies.
