Abstract

Abstract: The objective was to evaluate the existing literature on the therapeutic approach to insomnia in the context of primary health care. Original studies were searched using the descriptors insomnia, primary health care and treatment, in Portuguese and English, in the PUBMED and Virtual Health Library (VHL) databases. Articles published between 2017 and 2020, related to the treatment of insomnia and its repercussions on public health, were included, and documental or restricted access research was excluded. The treatment of insomnia includes non-pharmacological and pharmacological measures. Cognitive-behavioral therapy is considered a gold standard treatment, with long-term benefit, acting in several stages of sleep. Pharmacotherapy should be considered in well-indicated situations and in special subgroups. Considering the prevalence and clinical repercussions of insomnia, it is evident the importance of the physician who works in primary health care, in mastering the therapeutic management of insomnia.
